Arrival: Alleppey Boat Jetty
Our kettuvallam (traditional Kerala houseboat) was bigger than we expected β a master bedroom with AC, an open-air deck at the front, a small kitchen cabin, and a cook named Rajan who greeted us with fresh coconut water. We were immediately in love.
Hour 1β4: Into the Backwaters
The boat moves at about 5 km/h. That's not a bug β it's the feature. You drift past villages where children wave from the banks, past women washing clothes in the canal, past rice paddies bright green against the grey sky. We watched a fisherman cast his net in slow, perfect arcs. Neither of us spoke for a long time.
Lunch: The Best Meal of Our Trip
Rajan cooked karimeen pollichathu (pearl spot fish in banana leaf), Kerala prawn curry, thoran (coconut stir-fry), and rice. Eaten on the deck with the water on all sides. βΉ400 per head for a meal a 5-star restaurant couldn't match.
Overnight: Vembanad Lake
The boat anchored in the middle of Vembanad Lake β Kerala's largest lake β as the sun set. No lights on the water, just the boat, the stars, and absolute silence. We ate dinner watching fireflies. We didn't turn on our phones.
Morning: Misty Canals
Dawn on the backwaters is something you cannot photograph accurately. The mist sits low over the water, the coconut palms appear and disappear, a kingfisher flashes electric blue. Rajan made appam and stew for breakfast. We were back at the jetty by 9 AM and already planning our return.
